Team Gaim

 “The fellas out there think we’re crap. They think we’re society’s trash. What’s worse is that some of us Beat Riders are actually crap. Talk about fuckin’ reputation… but bottom line―we’re not gonna be that. We, Team Gaim ain’t gonna be no piece of shit. We’re here to dance, and when we fight, we fight to protect our stage.”

‘What’s worse is that some of us Beat Riders are actually crap,’ Mitsuzane suddenly remembers his team leader’s words. Actual crap. That was what was in front of him now. Mitsuzane doesn’t understand how a person can be made of just violence and arrogance, but what he does understand is that his opponent would cut him into ribbons without hesitation if he couldn’t get out of this.

 Mitsuzane makes a bet that even a creature of pure ignorance would understand fear.

 “Mister, do you see me? Not only do I look little, I am actually quite young, and in other words I am a legal minor. You must be aware what happens when you’re caught abusing a minor? And you’re not gonna get away from this either, ‘cause I know who you are. I know exactly who you are. I’m sure you aren’t willing to bust me when your whole life ahead of you is at stake, are you?” Mitsuzane tries to sound calm, sound smart, sound like he knows what he’s talking about. He tries to sound like he’s going to university―which he will, too.

 And then the Red Hot idiot starts to laugh, and Mitsuzane knows things have went wrong. The Red Hot keeps laughing and laughing, as if Mitsuzane said something hillarious. At last Mitsuzane can’t stand it: “What’s so funny?”

 “Minor? You say you’re a fuckin’ what? A fuckin’ minor? You think any of us give a fuck? You think you’re a minor―you think you’re a fuckin’ child. But you know who else is a fuckin’ child? Beat Riders! Every single one! You don’t become one if you ain’t a fuckin’ kid! Face it, you’re a Beat Rider because you’re a fuckin’ kid, and you know kids ain’t scared of busting another kid.”

 “Mitchey!”

 The moment Mitsuzane heard the voice, he realized he was saved. It was like a moment of baptization, when one realizes Christ’s love for them or something. The feeling that resonated within the heart the moment Mitsuzane heard the voice, the moment he saw the well-known figure storming into the alley.

 “Kouta-san…!”

 “Now who the fuck is this? A watchdog?” The Red Hot still got his attitude, and he’s still confident he can beat the hell out of Gaim with his slightly crazed up eyes and his other Red Hot friends. But Mitsuzane is no longer afraid. He’s got Kouta, and Kouta means victory. In physical rumbles at least, where humans fight humans and no Inves is related, that was how things worked.

 “Well, I guess that could be sorta true,” Kouta laughed a half-hearted laugh. Not even a bit nervous. And Kouta’s laugh is different from the Red Hot’s. It’s the kind of laugh that warms hearts, makes people smile and sometimes cry at the same time. “I’m not really a dancer anymore, and so I guess I’m sort of only a half-Gaim.”

 Kouta pauses his words to help Mitsuzane get up. Mitsuzane takes Kouta’s hand, and it’s warm.

 “You see, although I don’t dance anymore I’m still in shape ‘cause I work a lot,” Kouta states, calmly. “And I think that means you don’t really wanna mess with me.”

 The Red Hot snorts out a scornful laugh, and then it’s a fight.

 Kouta never really lost one of those.

 Kouta brings Mitsuzane back to the garage, and Mitsuzane feels truly home. And then Mitsuzane is suddenly honest. He starts to cry and he can’t stop it, so instead he grabs onto Kouta as he lets the hot tears run down his cheeks. Mitsuzane sniffs and Kouta smiles, and he gives his Mitchey a light but warm hug.

 “Kouta-san, I-I thought I’d be busted. Shit, I was so scared,” Mitsuzane rambles as he grips on Kouta’s jacket, “I was so scared.” The poor boy is shaking, so Kouta pats him on the back. “F-fuck… Oh, fuck… I-I’m sorry I m-made you worry… I fucking… I fucked up so bad…”
